"Spay / Neuter is the Answer"

We are currently able to offer the following spay / neuter plus rabies vaccination prices to Morgan County residents:

Large dogs: $14 (yes, that is fourteen!)
Small dogs and cats: $20 through Spay/Neuter Services of Indiana
at http://www.spayneuterservices.org

An extra big and special THANK YOU goes to St. Francis Pet Hospital in Centerton for doing spay and neuters of both our shelter pets as well as the community pets that are recipients of our grant moneys. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Please tell your friends and neighbors who have unspayed / un-neutered pets how important this is. Help stamp out pet overpopulation in Morgan County!

Volunteers Needed

Morgan County Humane Society is looking for volunteers for the following positions:

Treasurer -- Officer level position, requires 6 - 10 hours per week.

Cat Advocate -- This would entail transporting a few cats to PetsMart in Plainfield once every three weeks, setting them up in the Adoption Center, then feeding/watering/cleaning once a day for a week. At the end of the week, any remaining cats would need to be transported back to MCHS. See Cat Advocate Helper listing below.

Cat Advocate Helpers -- volunteers for feeding/watering/cleaning the cats at PetsMart one or two times during the week they are up there for adoption. Thank you, Kim! Anyone else?

Off site adoption events -- We are at PetsMart in Plainfield every Saturday. More pets adopted = more pets saved. Can you help? Thanks to all who have helped. Keep coming! Anyone else interested?

IT Coordinator – helps the shelter with their electronic equipment from computers to fax machines. Time requirement – occasional as needed.

Fundraising – Coordinate or help with fundraisers. We are currently trying to raise funds to finish our new (and wonderful!) free-roaming indoor-outdoor Kitty Kabana and Puppy Playhouse. We need some ideas and helpers! Time requirement -- occasional as needed.

Shelter – as always, we love to have volunteers come into the shelter and help socialize the cats and dogs. We also need occasional help with building maintenance/construction. Plumber, electricians, carpenters, etc. -- here's something you can help with! Thanks to all who have helped. Keep coming! Anyone else?

Leadership – We really need a few additional board members to help with our mission of ending unwanted/abused/neglected pets in Morgan County and beyond. Want to help in a BIG way? Let us know.

If you are interested in helping in any of these areas, please contact
Diane at 765-342-0903 or at mareseatoats7001@sbcglobal.net

MCHS ADOPTIONS AT PetsMart IN PLAINFIELD

Thanks to PetsMart in Plainfield, MCHS has yet another venue for getting our pets adopted. Our dedicated volunteers take pets up every Saturday for a day of adoptions. Cats get an additional chance every third week with an entire week of adoptions. Saturday, May 3, was a typical PetsMart day that went something like this:

Volunteers Julie Partridge and Marsha Ebert arrived with the dogs/puppies around 11:00 am at Petsmart. They were met by volunteers James and Rachel and Katie who helped set up the crates and the table and cat cage so they could get started. When Julie went out to the Van parked on the curb with the doors open, it was surrounded by folks looking at all the dogs yet to be unloaded. So Julie started getting them out and handing them (most were small dogs and young pups) to the folks gathered and asked them to carry them in to Marsha waiting just inside the door. Julie got out Milly the big lab and they were ready for a hectic day of adoptions. While Marsha and Julie were busy showing the dogs, the volunteers took turns walking the dogs out for potty breaks. They were very busy all day and ended up adopting 4 dogs and one kitten during the 5 hours they were there. They also collected $ 37 in donations. All in all a very productive day.

NOTE: Milly's sister, Maggie (pictured below), found her forever home at PetsMart on May 3. Milly left on the CanINE Express bound for New Hampshire on May 8 where some lucky family will adopt her.

OUR LITTLEST VOLUNTEERS ARE A BIG HELP!

In the past four months, Mr. Muston's first grade class from North Madison School in Mooresville has visited our shelter helping to clean kennels and provide care for our animals. The class also has been collecting donations for our shelter. The dog in the photo is Candi, who has since been adopted. (Imagine that!) We're not sure who the cat or the boy is, but clearly they are friends!

PET CARE TIP OF THE MONTH

Cocoa mulch contains ingredients that can be harmful to pets if ingested. The mulch, sold in garden supply stores, has a chocolate scent that is appetizing to some animals.

We have collected 9.532 TONS of paper for recycling which has saved 64 Cubic yards of landfill space. The shelter is paid a small check for all paper collected to be recycled.
