"Spay / Neuter is the Answer"

We at MCHS know that spaying and neutering of pets is the answer to the pet overpopulation problem in this part of the country.  Thanks to our hard-working Shelter Director, Angie Loudermilk, we have received grants from various organizations for this express purpose.  As a result, we have helped spay /neuter an amazing number of community-owned pets within Morgan County as follows:

From January 07 to April 08
615 dog and cat spay/neuters

WOW!

We are currently able to offer the following spay / neuter plus
rabies vaccination prices to Morgan County residents:

Large dogs -- $14  (yes, that is fourteen!)

Small dogs and cats -- $20 through Spay/Neuter Services of Indiana

at http://www.spayneuterservices.org/

Please tell your friends and neighbors who have unspayed / un-neutered pets how important this is.
Help stamp out pet overpopulation in Morgan County!

Volunteers Needed

Morgan County Humane Society is looking for volunteers for the following positions:

Treasurer -- Officer level position, requires about 10 hours per week.

Cat Advocate -- This would entail transporting a few cats to PetsMart in Plainfield once every three weeks, setting them up in the Adoption Center, then feeding/watering/cleaning once a day for a week.  At the end of the week, any remaining cats would need to be transported back to MCHS.  See Cat Advocate Helper listing below.

Cat Advocate Helpers -- volunteers for feeding/watering/cleaning the cats at PetsMart one or two times during the week they are up there for adoption.  Thank you, Kim!  Anyone else?

Off site adoption events -- We are at PetsMart in Plainfield every Saturday.  More pets adopted = more pets saved.  Can you help?  Thanks to all who have helped.  Keep coming!  Anyone else interested?

IT Coordinator – helps the shelter with their electronic equipment from computers to fax machines.  Time requirement – occasional as needed.

Fundraising – Coordinate or help with fundraisers.  We are currently trying to raise funds to finish our new (and wonderful!) free-roaming indoor-outdoor Kitty Kabana and Puppy Playhouse.  We need some ideas and helpers!  Time requirement -- occasional as needed

Volunteer Coordinator – Help us recruit and organize our volunteers.  Requirements – phone, e-mail access and 2-3 hours per month.  Note: this position does NOT require going into the shelter, so if it’s too heart-wrenching for you to see the pets there, this is a great way to help them.  Filled.  Thank you, Meri!

Shelter – as always, we love to have volunteers come into the shelter and help socialize the cats and dogs.  We also need occasional help with building maintenance/construction.  Plumber, electricians, carpenters, etc. -- here's something you can help with!  Thanks to all who have helped.  Keep coming!  Anyone else?

Photographer – takes pictures of the pets available for adoption and e-mails them to our Petfinder coordinator.  Requires your own digital camera, e-mail access, and a wee bit of patience.  Time requirement – 2-3 hours weekly but we’ll take what we can get!  Filled.  Thank you, Amy!  Thank you, Annie and Nick!

Leadership – We really need a few additional board members to help with our mission of ending unwanted/abused/neglected pets in Morgan County and beyond.  Want to help in a BIG way?  Let us know.

If you are interested in helping in any of these areas, please contact Diane at 765-342-0903 or at mareseatoats7001@sbcglobal.net.

MCHS IS A PROUD PARTNER OF RESCUE WAGGIN'!

Rescue Waggin’ Helps Us Save More Lives

Our shelter has been a partner in PetSmart Charities Rescue Waggin’ program since March of 2006. While we encourage people to spay and neuter their pets, not enough residents have done this so far. That means we still receive more unwanted pets than our small shelter can possibly hold.

Rather than euthanize adoptable pets to make room for more incoming animals, we search for new ways to find homes for homeless pets.  Through the Rescue Waggin’ program, some of our homeless dogs and puppies are transported each month to other shelters where dogs are more in demand and more likely to find a home. In fact, the destination shelters must have at least an 85 percent adoption rate to be considered for the program. No dog is ever displaced at these shelters to make room for one of our incoming pets. Through this partnership with PetSmart Charities and other shelters in our region, our shelter has saved over 315 dogs/puppies.  On April 17, twenty-two MCHS dogs and puppies rode the Rescue Waggin' to new loving homes.  Pictured below are 4 of those puppies plus (l to r) Franklin (rescued golden retriever), Matt McPherson (MCHS), Jamie Christianson (Rescue Waggin'), Angie Loudermilk (MCHS shelter director), and Jamie Rudersdorf. (Rescue Waggin')

PetSmart Charities also provides mentoring and training programs to Rescue Waggin’ partners like us to enhance operations and animal care. We can even apply for special grants to upgrade our facility and programs.

Of course, we still believe spay and neuter is the best option for reducing the pet population problem in our community. But at least for now, our partnership with PetSmart Charities Rescue Waggin’ provides another resource for us to save more lives.

LOUISE DOES NEW ENGLAND! -- update

Karen from New Hampshire SPCA writes, "Louise has been adopted to a perfect home!  The couple was looking for a companion to dote on …someone quiet and calm.  They looked so cute together.   I’ll pass your info on to the adopters so that they can follow up with you."   MCHS is happy to report that Desiree, Abby, Ruby and Alex were also adopted into homes in New England.  On April 10, eleven more MCHS dogs left for shelters and subsequent new homes in New England and Cleveland.  Most of those 11 dogs have already been adopted into loving forever homes.

Thank you to everyone who has donated toward this wonderful program.  Without your help, loving dogs like Louise might not find their forever homes.  For those who missed out on the chance to help save a life through this program, it costs MCHS about $30 per dog to prep dogs for New England.  If you want to make a donation toward this, just send a check to MCHS at the address below and write NE rescue in the memo.

MCHS Animal Control Officer

Will Weber is our senior Animal Control Officer who has been with MCHS since September 2005.  He says the best part of his job is meeting with the public, helping save animal's lives and working outdoors. The worst part of his job is seeing cases of animal abuse and neglect.

Will educates  Morgan County residents on the leash law. All dogs are required to remain on their own property at all times unless they are being walked on a leash by an adult. Two towns in Morgan County (Mooresville and Martinsville) also have leash laws in regards to cats. Will wants to remind all Morgan Co. residents to have their pets spayed and neutered.  If they need help paying for this, visit MCHS for assistance.

Will is a US Army Veteran. He and his wife live in Brown County and are the parents of five indoor cats, fish and one chameleon.  They have one daughter, son-in-law and two awesome grandsons.

PET CARE TIP OF THE MONTH

Spring has finally arrived in central Indiana!  Along with warmer weather, we can expect bugs to wake up and -- well -- "bug" our pets.

If you haven't already applied flea preventive to your cat or dog, there's no time like the present.  Otherwise, fleas just might "spring" into action!

JUST FOR FUN

If you like dogs and like to dance, you have to see this!

OPRAH'S PUPPY MILL SHOW

In case you missed the show Oprah did on puppy mills, here's a great link that tells the story.  It's a bit lengthy but well worth the time to read it.  You might want to have a tissue in hand.
